    Service Voluntary Certification Certificate of Qualification Exam

    Education Requirements: Grade 12 or equivalent.

    Training Hours: Complete 5,400 hours of on-the-job training and two 12-week in-class technical training sessions for this apprenticeship.

    Arborists take care of trees by pruning limbs, spraying pesticides, and diagnosing pests and disease. Their other tasks include irrigation, planting, and soil preparation. They sometimes use dangerous equipment, such as chainsaws, and the job may take them high into the treetops.

  • Horticultural Technician

    Service Voluntary Certification Certificate of Qualification Exam Red Seal

    Education Requirements: Grade 12 or equivalent.

    Training Hours: Complete 5,400 hours of on-the-job training and two 12-week in-class technical training sessions for this apprenticeship.

    Horticultural technicians may grow and sell crops and related materials in nurseries and greenhouses. They also landscape, operate greenhouses, nurseries, and garden centres, and move trees. Their knowledge includes irrigation methods and soil and pest management. Sometimes technicians use dangerous equipment, such as chainsaws or chippers.
