    Education Requirements: Grade 8 or equivalent.

    Training Hours: Complete 5,600 hours of on-the-job training and three 8-week in-class technical training sessions for this apprenticeship.

    Brick and stone masons construct and repair structures. They may work on walls, arches, paving, floors, fireplaces, chimneys, and smokestacks. Masons can specialize in high-temperature materials, such as fire brick, which are used for industrial furnaces, retorts, and boilers.

    Education Requirements: Successful completion of a Certificate of Qualification as a brick and stone mason.

    Training Hours: Complete 3,760 hours of on-the-job training and 240 hours of in-class technical training for this apprenticeship.

    Refractory masons protect structures from high heat by installing special refractory bricks, castables, blankets, plastics, or ceramic coatings to furnaces and kilns. They must be skilled at laying refractory bricks, installing castables, and removing old refractory masonry. This is a specialty trade for those who are certified as brick and stone masons.

    Construction Voluntary Certification Certificate of Qualification Exam

    Education Requirements: Grade 10 or equivalent.

    Training Hours: Complete 6,400 hours of on-the-job training and three 7-week (630) in-class technical training sessions for this apprenticeship.

    Heat and frost insulators prevent or reduce the transmission of heat, cold, sound, and fire in buildings. They apply insulating materials to plumbing, heating, cooling, and refrigeration systems, piping equipment, pressure vessels, and the interior surfaces of buildings.
